A Summer School Break Scheduled Major HVAC Renovation
Star Service has long-lasting relationships with schools all over the South, and all the K-12 school systems we work with have limited holidays and shorter summers. That means scheduling major HVAC renovations sometimes has to be done in tight time frames.
This was the case for the Mobile County Public School System. Star Service was one of five HVAC mechanical contractors who bid and were awarded the project based on price and qualifications. The scope of the project included designing and building upgraded mechanical systems, demolition of existing chillers, pumps and piping, and installing new chillers, pumps, piping and controls. The work had to be completed at three different schools within the district in a very short time-frame.
Challenges
- Unreliable and Inefficient Air Conditioning
- Frequent Equipment Failures
- High Energy Costs
Solutions
- Demolish Old Systems
- Install New Chillers, Pumps and Piping
- (2) Trane 130 Ton Air-Cooled Chillers
- (2) Trane 90 Ton Air-Cooled Chillers
- (2) Trane 60 Ton Air-Cooled Chillers
Results
All three schools, Mary G Montgomery High School, Hollinger’s Island Elementary and Council Traditional School, have upgraded and new, reliable and energy-efficient HVAC Mechanical Systems.
On top of the intense summer heat, the work was hindered by daily rain downpours. Coordination, mobilization and staying committed to the project schedule, ensured the job was finished on time and as originally specified.

“We were impressed with the way Star Service stepped up and met the tight deadlines so that the schools would have cold air before teachers and students returned.”
